Sam Wheeler - Front Ensemble Instructor

Hailing from Grants Pass, Oregon, Sam Wheeler is currently pursuing his Master’s in Percussion Performance at UT Austin. Outside of school Sam maintains a private studio in the greater Austin area and works with the East View High School Marching Band arranging, doing sound design, and teaching the front ensemble.


Before arriving in Austin in the summer of 2019 Sam taught extensively in the Salem and Portland areas while earning his undergraduate degree in Percussion Performance at Western Oregon University. In his time there, he taught the percussion section of the West Salem High School marching band from 2015 to 2018. He helped West Salem get to their first BOA Grand Nationals in the 2018 season where they advanced to semifinals.


All of his work is informed by a decade in the marching activity as a performer, educator, and designer. Sam Wheeler has performed extensively both as a soloist and in ensembles. His performance experience includes five summers performing with drum and bugle corps including the Phantom Regiment and his international debut as a marimba soloist as a finalist the International Percussion Institute Marimba Competition in Aberdeen, Scotland.
